I've been playing the tenor saxophone for about 15 years now I guess. I'm probably not all that good, as I only took lessons for a couple years. The rest of the time I used to play in church back in SD, but now that I'm here in Indiana, we don't have any other instruments in our church other than a piano and organ, so I don't play very often.
I'm planning on playing during the March meetings in Tucson coming up tho. That should be nice.

As you well know, I play the alto saxophone. I also play the piano, but haven't for a really long time. I don't have time. But, I love playing the sax in Concert band and pep band.

I want to learn how to play the piano. The other day a buddy of mine came over with his awesome guitar skills and we did some worshippin. It would be so cool if I could have added to the music. You can't worship with friends and play the saxophone at the same time...at least, I haven't mastered the art of singing and playing saxophone at the same time yet.
You play the sax? That's one of my favorite instruments... ranks right up there with the haunting flute. It's just such a worshipful sound.... but yeah, I can see your dilemma. But hey! At least you can play something.

Haunting flute??
it's a way the flute is played, not a specific type of flute. You hear it often played like that in Celtic songs (not the kind with bagpipes, the ones that sound surreal in their melody).

-Well, I'd love to know how to play the piano but as my greatest passion lies in the guitar, well that's what I am learning currently. Trust me, learning the guitar has got some major plataeusof progression, you don't wanna know but well,I have to withstand it alland get to know how to play the Guitar. I have a passion for the flute and the clarinet too........
-and I love classical music too, jazz, country(some of my pals call me 'cowgirl')......etc
-Hey, Ruth, that's just great, I mean you playing the alto sax.
There's this notion that goes around my school amongst the musicians that any boy usually feels like he's on top of the clouds if he gets to play the sax so well, you know! so, you've just set a great record here! lol

Hey Babyruth,
I'm watching this video you suggested we watch with Bro Aaron McGeary. I saw a saxophone on the video...was it yours?
I didn't see the person sitting there...it was just in the very corner of the screen. I'm not sure if the camera ever gets that far behind the piano to see the people playing the instruments.

No, it's not me. I don't play at church. I don't know who was, I don't remember anyone playing one, maybe Nathanael knows... Thank you Halima! I appreciate it a lot! I don't feel like I'm very good, but I do enjoy it greatly!

I started to play the violin when I was 8 and stopped when I was 17 and started the viola. I wasn't very good at either but I really want to pick the violin up again. I taught myself how to play the guitar last summer, but now I am stuck in a mediocre rut. Does anyone one have any idea's as to how I can add variety to simple chord progressions or how to move up to that next level?
trumpetplayer
03-08-2006, 12:51 PM
To move on to the next level its always ggod to get an experienced teacher. Also there are self instruction books that can help to. And as far as making chord progressions more interesting download some chord charts (many sites online) and see how people make there songs interesting. Also a little theory can help you understand better how chord progressions work.
I would recommend finding a good patient teacher if you want to move up to the next level. Maybe even a good guitar player in your church.
BroTrevor
03-08-2006, 12:53 PM
To move up to the next level you have to buy the most expensive instrument you can afford.
At least, this is what I'm trying to convince sisTrev of...
A nice 4000 dollar saxophone would really help me play a notch or two better.

 I'm afraid that won't work in my household as we've recently bought a new electric guitar. I think I'm going to have to invest in a good guitar teacher. Hopefully it won't be too expensive. As to chord progressions on the internet, I did find a really good site called www.pwarchive.com which has loads of christian songs and the chords. You can even change the key of the songs.

Bro Trevor you dont need a very expensive instrument, even though it helps. However make sure you have a instrument that plays well. Also certain brands are better then others, I now some sax players so ask me about brands if you want. A good site for instruments is www.wwbw.com

I used to play the flute. Now that i have braces i can not use my lips properly to play. Then i tried the clarinet but sucking on the reed is disgusting! I now play the organ and i really enjoy it (plus it does not take all the air out of you like the flute!) any of you flute players have you tried chewing gum(while playing) to keep your mouth from drying out and your lips from chaping. It worked for me!

Have fun trying it with the clarinet! i think all you will end up with is a very sticky mouth piece!

03-11-2006, 07:02 PM
Do not chew gum while you play flute and especially clarinet. This causes sugar and other bad stuff to get into your instrument. Mostly clarinet it would gum up the reed. Before playing any wind instrument you should completely was your mouth of all food.
With flute it would be better to just lick to lips, any flute teacher would advise against chewing gum while playing, also chewing gum could block the air passage.
(Sorry for the rant thats my geeky music teacher nature coming through)

Have to say my teacher did not mind it!:) Lucky for me:yay: it is awfully hard to lick your lips to keep the moist when your mouth is as dry as cotton. That is the one downfall to playing the flute.:012: I am not trying to sound mean that is just what i personally have to do when we go to places.

Bravo!!!! I wish I was that multi talented but unfortunately vanity and laziness stopped me when i was younger to fulfil my potential. So I have a violin sitting there that hasn't been played for about 6 years. I need to find a teacher soon. I wish I was naturally gifted like my bro. I have decided to start playing the harmonica. My brother has one and I was inspired to play it while he was on the phone. It is actually a lot of fun. It's also a distraction from homework. :) But, seriously, I really like it. I used to make fun of it, but it's lots of fun!

I too would really enjoy voice lessons if there is a chance and also to improve my skill in playing the guitar. I can only strumm and pluck a little but to lead, it requires special lessons. I think I won't be able to improve for my fingers has become stiffened probably due to aging.:)

If you find a good teacher, voice lessons can be a great benefit. Being a music major I had a chance to study with many different instructors, and found that some - while excellent singers - are not good teachers. I have also found that there are some that are wonderful teachers but average singers. I currently study with a graduate student from the local university, and she is awesome!

I Am Currently Taking Piano Lessons Trying To Better Learn To Play By Ear. Any Tips Out There?
It takes a lot of practice. Sometimes the best way to approach playing a melody by ear is to just listen to something and play around with it (this is where good tuning on both the recording and piano become very important!). For harmony, try to get the sounds of various chords (major, minor, augmented, and diminished are the main ones unless you are into jazz) into your head. This is best accomplished with exercises (I'm sure you are working on those).
Hope I didn't confuse you any!

Hi Alana,
Glad to hear you enjoy playing piano. What is your favorite piece? Do you strictly play classical or experiment with other genres?
Actually, I don't play very much classical at all. I can't read music, so I'm playing strictly by ear, but it's worked well for me.
I listen and play to contemporary and Southern Gospel the most, but occasionally a song will have a distinct flavor to it that is jazz, country, etc. So I guess I do experiment a little with other genres.
Mostly I compose dramatic pieces (it helps me express myself, not that I need much help in that area, but hey :) ), play specials for singers at church, and play the Friday night youth meetings.
Basically, I fool around and have tons of fun until it's time to get serious, then I have some more fun!
