I just started reading the great book Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan. This ia an amazing allegory about a Christian (us) going towards the celestial city. While I had read the book before in simplified wording it is awesome to read this in the old English. Spending time with the King James bible really helps to understand that old language. Other then Pilgrims Progress being a great Christian book it is also considered by many to be a Great piece of Literature.
The writer John Bunyan was definitely an amazing man. One of the early Baptists, he wrote this book when he was in jail, were he was sent, for preaching without official church sanction.
If you havent read this book I would definitely recommend it.Even if you dont feel up to reading the original get a modern version (however I would strongly recommend the original). This book is something all christians should read next to the bible and the message.
Also, has anyone read this book and have any comments?
Here is a quote by the prophet on this book
I believe it was Abraham Lincoln never owned a book in his life, till he was of age, but the Bible and... I think it was either the Foxe's "Book Of Martyrs"... I might not; it might've been another book. I think it was "Pilgrim's Progress," to be right. It was "Pilgrim's Progress," and--and the Bible. You see what kind of a character that molded?
Just let me go in your house and see what kind of pictures you got on your wall. Let me go to your home or your office, and let's see what kind of music's playing. See? What you read, what you look at, I can pretty well tell you what's on the inside of you (See?), because it feeds on that.
I wouldn't be surprised if namwacha has read it... she's read everything else of note in that time period.
We've an old copy of it at our house (and I mean old, like cloth over hardcover), but I've never been able to get to much into it.

I read it a long time ago as part of literature in school at our little Christian school I went to.
JoeC, didn't you study any Christian literature as part of your home-school curriculum?? (what do they teach people these days?)
As it has been....oh 10 years at least since I've read that...I really don't have any comments, other than to say it was worth the read.

I've read the children's version and heard it on tape. It's really good. I would love to analyze it. For AP Lit, we do literary terms and the only books I've been reading have been the Bible and Message books, so I've been using the Bible. It's so full of lit terms. Anyways, I used a story from the Bible, and had to analyze it a bit to fit the lit term, and I got something from it I never would have gotten had I not done a lit term on it. It was really neat. I love using the Bible and my teacher has not said anything about it. I wish I had more time to just sit and analyze it more, or let the Holy Spirit reveal it to me. I over-analyze everything though, so sometimes it gets confusing, but I thought I'd share my ramblings.:)

Nothing heavy. I was homeschooled 7th - 12th grade. Four of those years were with a Christian curriculum, the other with a secular curriculum (they had more electives... though in the end it was a poor choice academically). We didn't cover any major books like Christians Progress, mostly short stories - though with A-Beka we did cover the History of Old Testament Israel. The video instructor was really cool and brought the stories of Chronicles, Samuel, Kinds, etc. alive through his varied facial expressions and re-enactments.

Pilgrim's Progress is a great book... I've read the old version as well as a newer version, and heard it dramatized on the radio... definitely a Christian classic.

I read this book as a child and I loved it and still love it to this day. My version was beautifully illustrated and I loved to read it over and over again. It took me a while to understand that many things were merely metaphors. But when that did sink in it was even more of a blessing. I lent it to a young sister years ago and I never got it back. I am still devastated :012: :)

Well, confession is good for the soul.
I have never read the book cover to cover, bits and pieces.
But I have seen a couple of films on it, and listens to the book read on tapes (orginal version).
I have found a site for it, and downloaded a copy of it on my computer (listening that is). Every now and then I will listen to it. Like the Eagle tape, a few other good tapes or books. Worth rereading or listening to now and then.

A sister in church mentioned it, told a few things about it. Or at least I think that's the same book. May borrow it from her or buy it for myself, dunno

I liked it very much.
The part in Vanity Fair is so appropriate today, everything is for sale and can be bought. All temptations are available without the Law of the state hardly bothering you. Do what you want when you want.

I read a simplified version years ago - one of those little square classics with the pictures on every page, if anyone remembers those - and don't remember a lot. The bog of Despond stood out where his burden almost overcame him. Also when he was a prisoner of the giant (Despair?). His traveling companion Faithful was my favourite character.
Someone wrote a sequel where his wife, Christina, follows him.

My mom read me the entire book when we were homeschooled I believe.
But has anyone read The Pilgrim's Regress by C.S. Lewis? I have it downstairs and haven't quite got myself to start it yet.

Yes I have read it. It was so long ago I can't remember but I think it was good. SparkNotes always comes in handy.

we have the children's version of this book, which breaks the story down for kids to understand while still keeping with the story, (does that make since?)
Anyway...Trevor just recently read it to the boys. Doing the 1 or 2 chapter a night thing. They really liked it.

I made a point of reading it at least once a year all the way through a few years back...slacked off in recent times :ng_thumbd but I remember that it was good.

I have MP3 files of the book, and every now and then I will listen to it. Admittedly :embarrassed: I have only read bits and pieces of the book.
Maybe, maybe someday I will read the whole thing.
I really do enjoy the audio version, have listen to it several times and is great for driving around and listening too also.
