Finally, our own section to make posts in and get up our post counts :) Besides talking about guy things ;) Now we had better make sure it looks active in here...
OH MAN!!! WE CAN LIKE... DISUSS ways to find pi!!!!! :dft002:
BroTrevor

But wait....don't we already know what pi is? Why would we try to find it again?

Ok i promise i will not come back in lol.......well at least try not to :tank:
But wait....don't we already know what pi is? Why would we try to find it again?
To be honest we do not completely know what pi is. In fact we will never have an exact value for pi, becasue pi is non repeating non terminating decimal... At least for the first several billion digits... Who knows? Maybe one day pi will turn out to be a reating decimal? Maybe the reason being that it hasn't been noticed is that the period is several billion digits long.

whoa....
Didn't know that about Pi.
:tank:
I think all posts in this forum should have the tank.
Here is a good link for pi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi) , as it also contains other pi links.

"no pattern in the digits has ever been found"
That's rather interesting...

Enlighten me as the uses of telling whether a number is rational or irrational please. What difference would it make?
Enlighten me as the uses of telling whether a number is rational or irrational please. What difference would it make?
Ok, first I will give a textbook definition of rational and irrational numbers.
Definition:
A number x is a rational number if and only if there exist intergers p and q, where q does not equal zero, such that x = p/q. The real numbers that are not rational are called irrational .
What the definition is saying is that if you can express a number as the quotient of two integers ( quotient: p/q ), then the number is rational.
Example: 8 is a rational number.
Proof:
8 = p/q ---------> 8 = 16/2 ------> 8 = 8
To clarify a point.... All intergers ( ... -7, -6, -5, ...., 0, 1, 2, 3, ....)
are rational numbers.
But, not all numbers are rational!
Pay careful attention to the definition... The numbers in the quotient ( p/q) must be integers... But the number x, whith x = p/q does not have to be an interger. It can be a decimal number.
Example:
1/4 is rational. 1/4 = .25
1/3 is rational. 1/3 = .333333333333..... to infinity
But there is a certain class of numbers called the irrational numbers
that cannot be expressed as the quotient (p/q) of two integers.
Example:
sqrt(2) = 1.414........
Try as you might, you cannot find two integers that when dived by the other equals the square root of 2.
I hoped this helped. :)

It did help. I think it will also keep the girls away.
Hahahaha it probally will! :tank:
Now, after calculating pi to the billionth decimal place, it seems the hard thing to do would be to search for patterns.
I mean, you've got to look at every digit! It's like trying to find out how many suqares are in a graph paper - the possibilities seem endless. Then, after all that searching, not to find a pattern.
It just makes me wonder how long they spent searching.
BroTrevor

They, I'm sure, wrote a computer program to search....
then they went and got coffee...
:coffeemac Coffee sounds really good right now.
Ever had turkish? :coffee_lu
Example:
sqrt(2) = 1.414........
sqrt(2) = 1.414213562......
Just wanted to clear that up. As it was, there could have been a pattern there (41414141...) - I wanted to make sure no readers got confused. :batman:

We should get together sometime for coffee...
"The Fort" coffee event.

Hey JoeC thank you for clarifying my point! :)

sqrt(2) = 1.414213562......
did u figure that one out by hand Joe?:worthy: ...and i think i see a pattern here those are all numbers...
actually, I used a graphing calculator :)
By golly my good man, you mean you didn't use your toes? :dft002:

even einstein himself said as he got older he was loseing his ability's, its when ppl are young like JoeC that there greatest moment are achieved:stupid:
I didn't know that about Einstein

I'm afraid as we get older we do get slower... I'm already feeling way too old :( Though at least here on the board are others my age, so it isn't as bad as elsewhere :)
every time I start playing with toddlers I begin to feeld old. :wheelchai
Man, those guys have energy!
HotShot53
02-09-2006, 11:29 PM
Lol, I know... little kids never seem to run out of energy. I feel old just chatting with the teenagers...
HotShot53
02-10-2006, 12:22 AM
well, when you are like 4-6 years older than almost everyone you chat with, which was the case with me before YQF.... you feel old pretty quick ;)
But why. I mean I feel old next to toddlers because of my relative lack of energy. What's your excuse for feeling old around us?
HotShot53
02-10-2006, 12:29 AM
Umm.... cause it's a good excuse to complain about something ;)
Well then, that's not a good excuse at all. :gun_banda

(To date, Pi has been calculated to about the 35 billionth decimal place - and still with no discernable pattern.)

I'm here so that Hotshot will not feel old.
Quit complaining... go build something, solve a problem, engineer or design stuff..or play some football or chess.
After all, we don't want our new Fort to be riddled with complaints!!

too bad. Then I should have used the lil lad in the "magic in books/movies"-thread quite often!! :harhar1:
But then again: Only 4 icons in one post wouldn´t have been enough! haha JK
PS:
Sorry guys, for reading YOUR Fort.
But I just had to say that! :peep:
No problem with reading, but you really aren't allowed to post. We obey the rules in your forum...
OK guys, we must band together in UNITY to protect the Fort!
The next girl to invade, we will all give her negative reputation!!!

-15 REP - that should be enough to keep 'em away! :surrender <this smilie represents the girls>
Also, according to previous documentation (http://www.yqnews.org/forums/showthread.php?p=9911#post9911) DJ, you have every right to delete a girls post in here. We said that we'd do as much for their forum concerning guy posts. :ranting:

I think your method will prevent posts more than just deleting them, Joe... combined we could give someone a big hit to their rating :box:
And Melody, posting as anonymous isn't proper, even if you do have something interesting to post ;)

WOAH! :dft002:
The winds of war?
Did someone pass gas?!?!?!?!?!? :dft002: :dft002:
That's so gross.... but hey, if the girls are reading they'll be disgusted so it's all good. :chris:
Ar, forsooth sur..... Tis disgustingwhat keeps the enemy at bay. :chris:
Anyhow, to get back on to the business that was at hand before the invasion, we were talking about pi. JMG, my good man, would you do the honors?

And that's just a million decimal places.
It keeps going. Kinda like that bunny. And, like....time. And taxes. And stuff.
And now for something completely different!

Are YOU an Irish cowboy soldier ninja?
Anyhow, to get back on to the business that was at hand before the invasion, we were talking about pi. JMG, my good man, would you do the honors?
Well... Pi is a transcendental number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcendental_number).
I don't have time to quanitfy what a transcendental number is, becasue at the moment I have to go study, and also I need to become more grounded in the definition of a transcendental number.
However, the above link is good. :dft010:
Also, here is an iteresting Pi (http://www.angio.net/pi/piquery) link. :dft010:
Did you find out about these numbers through your current classes... or did you just read up on them in your spare time?
RANDOM THOUGHT!!! :taz:
Guys! I just thought of something! We need to strive to make our Fort the best forum in the whole YQF community - then all the girls will be just green/primed with envy that they can't post in it!
So charge up your creative botteries and start posting and making new and better threads! :yay:
