View Full Version : Great Courses:
Hey! For you learning nerds, there is a great company called The Teaching Company (http://www.teach12.com/teach12.asp). They record their lectures using some of the best professors in the U.S. right out of thier studio.
Their courses are really reasonable when on sale (http://www.teach12.com/store/coursesSaleSub.asp?t=&sl=1&s=904&sbjArea=Fine%20Arts%20and%20Music&TDet=%20On%20Sale%20By%20Subject&fMode=s). I'm off to watch one of the lectures in the series The Joy of Thinking: The Beauty and Power of Classical Mathematical Idea (http://www.teach12.com/ttc/assets/coursedescriptions/1423.asp?pc=Search).
Check them out at http://www.thegreatcourses.com/ and let me know what you think!
Pssst, I expect a response from you JMG.

Looks interesting... except I've never much liked classes I didn't have to take ;)
You never enjoyed a class? You see, this is the beauty of it all... you get to select the type of course you like and then be taught by a phenomenal prof!

Wow, it sounds really good! =)
I used to get a catelogue from "The Teaching Company", but I could never afford anything! :aaaah:
Infinity has captured my imagination... It is so beatiful.
Certain questions about infinity stem from asking, "What is the true meaning of dividing by zero?" "Why do certain series go to infinity?" "Can every positive integer be expressed as the limit of an infinite series?" "Can every number be expressed as the limit of an infinite series?" And there are many more questions... Some are know, and others are yet to be discoverd...

JMG..if you didn't manage the first time, try the second time!
(does that ring a bell?) - i hope so.

Hahahahaha, OK!!! :aaaah:
I'm a little clueless here.
It is in reference to my signature "If it didn't work the first time try again! "
Don't worry, I understand! HAHahahahahahaha... :aaaah:

Wow learning for the sake of learning and not to get a grade. What a revolutionary idea! Haha!
Unfortunately it seems I have so much work in my classes that I could'nt have anymore classes, plus with the sale there still to pricey.
But I definitely agree that learning is so much more enjoyable when theres no essays or tests to worry about.
Anyways studying and getting into the message and my bible is what I want to be doing in my spare time.:yay: EAT THE WORD!!

-okay, why are there NO CLUES people?Have you updated yourself with what is going on in this thread..coz if you read thru it all, not leaving out the days you didn't view it, you'll be all 'clue-full' - lol

i think that is s aplendid idea mu. people like reading the last posts and getting clued in, never mind they are connected with other posts before.

I went to the site; sounds very interesting.
I just bought a 100 dollar program for speed reading, and enhanced comprehension, from a company called Infinite Mind. I have not received it yet, but am told that it is really great. It was developed by a neurologist, in Japan, and is formulated to stimulate the brain, therefore enhancing comprehension, and to exercise to eyes, and enhancing their speed. I can hardly wait to try it!! I actually bought it yesterday at 2:15 PM, so I should have it before next Wednesday!
Anyways, about the course you suggested, I just might try it. I was taught math by a mathematical engineer, from NASA, and absolutely LOVE math! The other courses look nice, as well. Thanks for the suggestion!
that's no fair.... wish I was taught by a NASA engineer.
There's a course akin to the speed reding course you are speaking of, but it's for the memory. It's called Mega Memory. You can pick it up pretty cheap at Amazon.com because people buy it all the time and then decide they don't have the time to go through with it.
From the reviews, it sounds like the people who actually go through with the program find it to be effective.

i have to agree with you! i love math also and pretty much all the other subjects in school!:yay:

Math, uh! I used to like it, but then the rules started changing and there were all these exceptions to the rules. And things started to stop working out, and I got lost. :ng_thumbd But, I think it's neat you love math. You must be smart. I am not, unfortunately.

I liked math up through calculus... by then common sense didn't apply as much, so I didn't like it as much ;)
And ayn_joy may have been taught math by a NASA engineer, but I can still beat her in mental math ;) (i.e. doing 23 * 15 in your head)
Oh yeah, what's the recursive definition for the following # series?
.9, .99, .999, .9999...

Lol, any type of higher math I'm beat on.... plain simple common sense math is what I do ;)
That's exactly what I don't do... I make the mistake:
2 *7... "oh, I got this one, it's easy. 12!"
For some reason the simple ones are the ones I get messed up on. :)

Josiah if you check your email I sent you a recursive definition of the .999999 series. I sent it to you on 4-17-06. :)
Yeah, if you check your e-mail, I sent you a different one. :)
Ok, I checked my email but there is no new mail from you.
Did you send it to my gmail account?

I knew what it meant! I forgot already. We reviewed that at the beginning of this year. Too bad I don't remember it.
hmmm.... I thought I sent it to your e-mail - but it's not in my sent box. :misli:
I used a recursive definition.
an = an-1 * .1 + a1
where a1 = .9

Josiah I must apologize, I did not send you a recursive definition of
.9999..., instead I sent you a definition of .9999... :y10:.
On a side note you can beautify your recursive definition and make it more concise if you rewrite it using inifinite series notation. :)

You shouldn't feel that way. Intelligence doesn't follow from knowledge.
