View Full Version : New Reputation System In Effect!!!

JoeC
01-24-2006, 06:52 PM
Due to some of the members of these forums expressing their desire to have something that denotes the quality of the poster and not merely the quantity of their posts, we have enabled the user reputation system.

This allows users to "grade" other users' on a post-by-post basis. After someone gets enough points, they'll move up to the next level. To view another user's reputation, simply hover over the gem at the right hand side of their post (right under their location) and the reputation will appear.

To rate someone's individual post, click on the balance scales at the upper right of the post in question (right by the alert button). Then vote! Make sure you say why you liked their post! This way you can encourage people by letting them know what they did right on that post.

Voting power is determined by voter reputation and voter post count. Newbies start out with 1 point for every vote. With every 500 posts or +100 (not -100) reputation points the user has they are given 1 extra point to vote with.

After voting on a user's post, you must vote on 10 other users before returning to the same user. This is a system enforced rule. All voting is anonymous.

Have Fun!

Criteria Ideas for Voting:

How much you enjoyed the post.
How well thought out the post seems to be.
Readability of the post (grammar, spelling, & formatting).
Relevance to the thread topic.
Relevance to the posts that precede it.

Sounds like a good system... hopefully it gets used :)

One recomendation is to lower the number of other people you have to rate before rating the same person again... there are only 9 people with over 250 posts (including myself), and with Samurai gone for a couple weeks that leaves 8... and if someone else like collegegirl disapears for a few days you have even less. So it may get pretty hard to rate 10 other people's posts before re-rating the same person's again. I'd recomend lowering the number to around 5-7 for now until more people start posting.

JoeC
01-24-2006, 10:19 PM
I was waiting for someone to comment on that, and since you did, I have gone ahead and lowered the requirement to 5.

Mick_Mack89
01-24-2006, 10:58 PM
What are the different levels of quality?

JoeC
01-24-2006, 11:06 PM
As it stands now (system default), subject to modification, open to input from our members:

User is infamous around these parts -99999

User can only hope to improve -50

User has a little shameless behaviour in the past -10

User is an unknown quantity at this point 0

User is on a distinguished road 10

User will become famous soon enough 50

User has a spectacular aura about 150

User is a jewel in the rough 250

User is just really nice 350

User is a glorious beacon of light 450

User is a name known to all 550

User is a splendid one to behold 650

User has much to be proud of 1000

User has a brilliant future 1500

User has a reputation beyond repute 2000

One question... once you rate a person and leave a comment, how does that person see the comments, and can anyone else see the comments?

JoeC
01-24-2006, 11:53 PM
To see your comments, you have to find the post that someone commented on and click the balances. It'll then tell you what the person said (but not who said it). Only the user and the admins can read the comments.

HotShot53
01-25-2006, 12:28 AM
Hmm... that is going to make it hard for people to find the comments... is there any way of making a list of your own posts that people have rated, or somehow indicating on the posts themselves that they have been rated?

JoeC
01-25-2006, 12:39 AM
Not that I know of. The system isn't without fault, but I think it's gonna still add to things around here.

BroTrevor
01-25-2006, 03:26 PM
Do you think however, that this may just become another popularity contest? People will obviously vote for people they know and like.. Some may be impartial and truly vote on the posts content and worth, but...how often will that happen?

Something to think about...I'm not sure if that would happen or not, but it may not be an accurate system.

BroTrevor
01-25-2006, 03:30 PM
Also...what if people don't participate in the voting? Will the system fair on its own? perhaps only a few will actually take the time to vote for posts.

What will a "I disapprove" vote do? Take away points?

Not to be a naysayer... Just trying to flush this out real good.

JoeC
01-25-2006, 08:04 PM
Disapproving will take away points. I don't have an answer for the other questions. I suppose we'll just have to see.

NeedGod
01-26-2006, 03:22 AM
i like this new system. i am going straight to blesseds post to vote for her and approve. i love her, she is sooo encouraging.

BroTrevor
01-26-2006, 09:54 AM
SO, JoeC, I'm rather dissappointed you don't have the answers to my questions there.

Should I disapprove of that post?

<grin>

NeedGod

BroTrevor
01-26-2006, 03:17 PM
Ok, I just went through ALL of my posts. (that took awhile)

I have 10 rep points. I never saw any post where someone gave me a rep comment or point.

So does everyone have a default of 10...or am I missing something?

(I really am interested in seeing this work)

I've been out there voting for people.

Also, I think reputation status should be tied to how much you vote for others as well. I mean, if someone just "accepts" votes, but doesn't give votes, that should be taken into account.

Imagine if you had a friend that always bought your dinner, but you never bought his? I mean...what kind of reputation would that give one? "People always buy dinner for this guy" would be his niche.

Conversely, the guy that "always buys others dinner" might be a fairly well thought of individual?

Also, this would give others incentive to not only recieve, but to also give feedback.

HotShot53
01-26-2006, 09:30 PM
Yeah, everyone seems to be "On a distinguished road", which is the rank you get with 10 points... so I think everyone started with 10. (Umm.... where can you see how many points you have? Somehow I don't recall seeing that...)

BroTrevor
01-26-2006, 09:55 PM
I clicked on my little "balances" deal. it told me how many I had.

HotShot53

Good eye! I did not know that. I need to fix something I said earlier now:

Reputation comments are not anonymous. So you'll want to be somewhat nice if posting "constructive criticism." :)

I was probably tired when I made that mistake. When I'm tired, the words in my mind somehow don't all make it to my fingers - or my fingers will botch up the words.

It works this way when I'm talking and tired too. The words get garbled, or I stutter, or some other weird thing. It's frustratingly annoying.

I have another question regarding this system.

What are the colors of the squares supposed to mean.

Mine is green, and I've seen gray and red.

I'm assuming a particular color is a particular rating...can we see what ratings go with what colors somewhere?

Thanks.

JoeC
01-30-2006, 02:58 PM
I don't really know the colors myself - we'll just have to see as we go along. They do relate to the member's reputation though.

You can tell what someone's reputation is if you hold your mouse perfectly still over their gem for a second or two. It pops up.

BroTrevor
01-30-2006, 03:26 PM
Ok, so

Green = 'on the road to becoming distinguished'
Red = 'a little shameless behavior in the past'

I thought I saw a gray earlier, but can't seem to find it.

JoeC
01-30-2006, 03:50 PM
You might have seen the grey in your user rep comments area (under user cp). This indicates the user has no voting power (voting power is granted after you have been a member for 30+ days and a post count of 50 or more).

This is what the vbulletin (creator the this forum software) has to say about the user repuation system:

User Reputation in its simplest form is a ranking of your user's benefit to your
forum. Its basis comes from the opinions of all of your forum users that choose
take part in it.

Users gain and lose reputation based on how their posts are scored by other
forum participants. Users with the ability to affect reputation, will either
give or take aways points by approving or disapproving with a post's content.

User reputation can be a derisive element of your forum so great care should be
taken before a decision is made to enable it.

if you like or dislike someone's post enough to rate it, you click on the little icon of scales on the top right of their post. Then you can give it a positive or negative rating, and say why.

To see if anyone has rated your posts, go to your User CP and it will list all the comments people made and tell you how much reputation you have.

JoeC
02-12-2006, 05:49 PM
You can give good or bad rep to anyone. This is generally the things I look for:

Well presented post - becomes important in any post over 5 - 10 sentences (formatting is easy on my eyes, good grammar and punctuation).
A good joke.
A well thought post.
Something I enjoyed for whatever reason
If I could tell that someone else enjoyed the post (even if it wasn't a post directed at me... as in the case of the points I gave FreeAtLast for giving a hearty welcome to a new member)
In general, if it makes the forums better, I like to compliment it. If it makes them worse, I disapprove. There's the in between stuff and the occasional mischievous gift of positive or negative reputation, but I try to limit that. http://www.yqnews.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Remember, when you vote positively, your full rep power is thrown into the vote. When you vote negatively, only half your power goes into the vote.

Ok, this is a question kind of related to the repuation system, and I didn't want to start a new thread, so I'll just stick it here. Ok, so you know the green boxes that show up on your posts or profile? Well, it used to be that when you hovered your mouse over them, a little title thing would show up. Well, about 3 or more months ago, my computer stopped showing it, so I assumed it was gone. But, just last night, on someone else's computer, it showed them! I was disappointed because I haven't gotten to see them for a long time. So, why aren't mine showing up? Can someone help me?

Just make sure someone suggests it for you... cause if you suggest it, it's automatically ruled out ;)

Ok...I'll make sure to tell everyone what title I want. :)

I have a suggestion. Since almost everyone who posts regularly on here all have "Reputation's Beyond Repute," we should have new titles for new amounts of rep, or however the system works. I know this means a lot more time. But... if it happened someday, like the allowance of me to change my name, it would be a nice thing! :D

I would assume it's a simple matter of adding some more levels, and putting in some more words.... but I haven't the faintest clue if it really is that simple or not ;)
