<ahem>
This thread is intended to be the place to go for reputation questions. I recommend to the mods that we make this post sticky, and perhaps even close this after I post, so that we can refer newcomers with questions to it, and it not be an uber-long off topic thread.
I encourage the mods to fix anything that might be incorrectly stated. This post is intended to be a good start to answering the reputation question, modification to the original is encouraged as more relevant data is found.
I shall commense...
------------
What's this reputation thing about?
Due to some of the members of these forums expressing their desire to have something that denotes the quality of the poster and not merely the quantity of their posts, we have enabled the user reputation system.
This allows users to "grade" other users' on a post-by-post basis. After someone gets enough points, they'll move up to the next level. To view another user's reputation, simply hover over the gem at the right hand side of their post (right under their location) and the reputation will appear.
How do I vote for someone?
To rate someone's individual post, click on the balance scales at the upper right of the post in question (right by the alert button). Then vote! Make sure you say why you liked their post! This way you can encourage people by letting them know what they did right on that post.
How often can I vote for someone?
After voting on a user's post, you must vote on 2 other users before returning to the same user. This is a system enforced rule.
Will they know who I am?
All voting is anonymous. Except when voting for moderators, but they've been shown to not really take it personally. Some choose to denote who it is giving the points in the comments.
How can I view the reputations comments people have given me??
Click on "user CP"
What are good criteria for voting:
How much you enjoyed the post.
Did you Laugh out loud? (no really)
How well thought out the post seems to be.
Readability of the post (grammar, spelling, & formatting).
Relevance to the thread topic.
Relevance to the posts that precede it.
Can I give constructive criticism to posts I don't like?
Yes, when voting for a post, click the "I disapprove" and state the
reason why you disapprove. Remember to be kind.
Can I give reputation points to someone and not leave a comment?
For every vote you give w/o a reason as to why you are giving it, the absolute power of your vote will be deducted from your reputation. The vote will be left in the system, but if you are caught you will be the one suffering for it.
Example: Given that you're reputation power is 6:
Case 1:
You vote for member A's post favorably, effectively giving them a boost of 6 rep points. But, you do not provide a reason for your vote. If your current rep points are at 103, you will be lowered to 97.
Case 2:
You vote for member B's post unfavorably, effectively dropping their reputation points by 3. But, you do not provide a reason for your vote. If your current rep points are at 103, you will be lower to 100.
How do I get Rep power?
Voting power is granted after you a post count of 50 or more.
Also, you get 1 point added for every 30 days you are a member of the forums.
You also receive 1 point for every 500 posts
You also receive 1 point for every 50 Reputation points
What's the difference between Rep power and rep points?
Rep POWER is the amount of points you give someone when you vote for someone.
Rep POINTS is how many points you have that people have given you. This is determined by the power of the
people who vote for you.
The two are not DIRECTLY related, although as stated in the previous question, for every 100 rep points you receive, your power is increased by 1 point.
