View Full Version : Pruning!
I just noticed, that Joe had sent an email about pruning of members, so had to hurry to start sending at least 5 posts during this week.... :D
Yup. Sorry, but we've had issues with spammers lately. We'll also be trying to switch to an email confirming registration process - kinda like the one on the main site.
Oh, all righty... but I think, this was now my 5th, so I dont need to worry now, right? :D
nope, that was your 58th. You never needed to worry in the first place. ;)

True, unless it is like some sites where the username cannot be used for so many months after the account has been closed.
Oh, lol, I thought, it needed to be 5 messages during this next week to be sent. But good, it was overall-number of posts! YOU MADE MY DAY! Thanks for clearing it for me! :yay:

I do not think we should prune people that do not post... and why 5 posts?
Maybe prune account that that are not used (no post and not logged in for at least one month or two) would be enough.
If spam is a problem, I would suggest some kind of approvement of new members (either the person must be knows or its posts be accepted by a few members or an admistrator.

I believe along with the prunning of the inactive members, Joe will be adding some slight bit more of verification... and you all probably don't see most of the spam than gets posted, as us moderators remove it as soon as one of us sees it.

You make me feel so safe Hotshot.

I do not think we should prune people that do not post... and why 5 posts?
Five posts is the general criteria. We'll be making more discerning decisions when it comes time to prune.

I don't see anything wrong with the five post limit, I think its a good criteria.

For peoples that have nothing to say or that would only post something that makes sense, FIVE posts is a lot.
Also, no all people write that fast... When writing I often change my mind and I can easily pass many minutes writing a post (or an email) and then maybe even decide not to post finally.
No everyone are compute addicts... and not everyone wants to pass all of its time in front of a computer.
In fact, an email that ask to do something like that look much like spam we receive that ask us to forward an email to at least x peoples... Generally, I do not bother with such emails and simply delete them.
So these emails about pruning look a lot like the spam that some peoples send telling us that we should send that much messages for out Hotmail account to stay alive (they pretend to be Hotmail staff).
Also, I do knows peoples that only accepts email from those who are in their green list so someone who do not post might not even receive such a warning.
Finally, peoples that do not log often will probably be the same one that do not read their email often and might even not have their own computer and when they have access to one, not have much time to uses it...
I think we should accepts that some peoples wants to register and not post often and might not even have time for that. I do not knows any other forums with such rules.
If peoples write useless and empty messages because of that rule, then it make only waste time to almost everyone that would read them... As a christian we must be carefull how we spend time.

5 posts since you have joined is not an unreasonable amount... if you make less than that, there was not much reason to join in the first place. The only reason to join is to post... so if you don't post, you shouldn't mind getting removed.
AlanaH
09-16-2006, 06:22 PM
Exactly. I joined, fully aware that I was going to be spending a lot of time on here. I wouldn't have joined, and then just sat and never logged on. And as someone said in another post, if you get removed and want to come back, you can always re-sign up. It shouldn't be a big deal.
For peoples that have nothing to say or that would only post something that makes sense, FIVE posts is a lot.
Also, no all people write that fast... When writing I often change my mind and I can easily pass many minutes writing a post (or an email) and then maybe even decide not to post finally.

Thanks again for the input, Phillippe. I ask that you trust me when I say that we will use discernment when it comes time to prune away members. As I said, five posts was the baseline requirement for getting pruned. That is, if a member has five or more sound posts, they don't even need to be worried.
Any account below that amount will be scrutinized... email address checked (invalid email addresses are characteristic of spammers), previous posts checked, last activity checked (if they have been a member for a six months, but haven't logged in for a full month and have posted zero posts, it's safe to say that their account is dormant and eliminate it from the system).
Case In Point:
I have an account at an INTP forum. I haven't been there in months. Last time I was there, I didn't even log in as I wasn't interested in posting. If they did kill my account, I wouldn't miss it and I would totally understand. If I did want to post ever again, I would simply create a new account. No big deal.
As for the Hotmail spam... I wish it wasn't spam. Hotmail and all the other e-mail providers have so many accounts that if you want an email account and you loved monkeys, you couldn't simply sign up as monkeyluvver@hotmail.com, you'd have to be monkeyluvver86375401@hotmail.com. And many many many of their accounts are dormant. Nobody closes them out when they change their email address. I have a dormant account there myself. It's joe_the_mo@hotmail.com. Don't send e-mail there, I doubt I even know the password to get in - and little do I care. It just collects junk mail, bogging down the Hotmail server like tens of thousands of other useless accounts.

Aaaah! A rant! Don't see those to often these days... :) I remember them back in my days at the ODP (Open Directory Project for those of you that don't know... http://dmoz.org/ ). Anyway we'd have late night endless rants.
But see that was my first experience really with online communities and user accounts. The rule there was, one account per person for your lifetime. They didn't delete the old ones. And if they caught you using a new one... you were locked out of both.
They also never closed threads there...
So that is what I was used to. :) Coming to YQN was/is kind of a shock! ;)

Ok for the record (sorry about this ruth but) I'm gonna have to disagree with Ruth. I don't think girls have a right to say that any guy is ugly (not handsome whatever) just as I don't think guys should be saying anything similar to a girl. It hurts people's feelings, and it's really not very loving. Would you expect our Lord Jesus to say that He thinks someone is not handsome?? And we are supposed to be Christ-like right?

So I'm going to choose "joe was secretly yearning for it" on this new poll up here..
oh...and...
arrrrr........
Just to make this clear, I WAS NOT FLIRTING!!!!!!!! I do not flirt. I do not recall ever flirting in my life. That one time when I was under the age of 1 does not count. I was just smiling nicely. Anyways, I replied to this, and my computer crashed, so it didn't post. I think it was computer's way of showing it's disgust to this topic of me flirting with anyone. Now I can't really remember what I said, but I was not, I repeat, was not flirting. I do not agree with any kind of online relationship. Friends are ok, as long as you have boundaries, but flirting and other relationships are wrong. I would never do that. I have never met Joe or talked to him in my life. MSN doesn't count. Therefore, I would not flirt with him, or any other person, for that matter.
On the matter of me giving my opinion, yes I do enjoy it, but Joe indirectly asked for it. What you see in his post of "evidence" is not all. He was "egging me on," so to speak on MSN. There was nothing innappropriate about our conversation, but he did "egg me on." Therefore, I am not guilty. The only think I am guilty of is not telling the truth very nicely. Therefore, I will apologize once more. Joe, I am very sorry for hurting your feelings. I will try my best not to mention anything too mean about your looks again. There, is it all better now?
The very idea of ME, flirting with anyone! Especially online! Gross!!!!!!
I was "egging you on" on MSN, was I?
Okay folks, I just happen to keep transcripts of all my conversations. Go back and look at her posts. The first time she implied anything about my looks was 09-16-2006, 11:40 PM. If you want a copy of the transcript of our conversation that night up to that time before you vote, let me know. I have nothing to hide. You will see that the only way I could have "egged her on" was to frustrate her by not giving her the specific title she requested.
btw Ruth, you don't mind my handing out the convo, do you? Perhaps you'd like to have a copy to see what a flimsy case you have? Oh, and I forgive you Ruth. I just hope you realize that when tables are turned the same rules apply.
Now, while on the subject of transcripts, I'd like to accuse one of our leading candidates of dishonesty .:shuriken:
Brother Trevor puts forth that he thinks I was "secretly yearning" for Ruth's opinion because he says he thinks that we were flirting. However, I have evidence to the contrare. This is what he said regarding it on MSN just before he posted:
9/19/200611:19:50 AM JoeC Trevor your just trying to get greenies at my expense
9/19/200611:20:56 AM Trevor JoeC is that so wrong?
9/19/200611:22:13 AM JoeC Trevor it's a little exploitative.
9/19/200611:22:34 AM Trevor JoeC but oh so very funny....
9/19/200611:23:39 AM Trevor JoeC heh heh...
9/19/200611:24:08 AM JoeC Trevor heh
9/19/200611:24:16 AM Trevor JoeC I like to stir up trouble every now and again...
9/19/200611:24:24 AM Trevor JoeC makes things more interesting...
So, we see that really he was only trying to be funny. But making such a serious accusation in jest is not funny at all. Based upon the evidence of his exercise of dishonesty and falsely accusing someone in jest , it is my opinion that Brother Trevor may not yet have the necessary qualities for true leadership.

I know it's hard, guys don't mature as quickly, and your sister is getting married soon, so I'm sure you're under a lot of stress, so I'll forgive you, thank you for forgiving me for my not so nice comments about your looks, and we'll call it a truce, ok?

Was that a truce speech?????

Ah, but the secretly yearning part was whomever created the polls wording, not mine.
My suspicion of the now quite disavowed flirtation was before you and I had chatted.
The stirring up trouble was merely posting my own now-quite-disavowed-flirtation-suspicion thoughts.
So I fail to see the dishonesty part. Again, the "false accusation" you "accuse" me of, was nothing of the sort. It was a mere admission of my thoughts...and others were thinking it as well. So it was good to get it out, even tho we all know that it is now quite disavowed.

What did you think I'd say? Did you think I'd lie and say I was flirting? Never!
Yes, blessed, that was a truce speech. I think it's the right thing to do, since Joe would never do it, I have to be the bigger person (maturity speaking) and call a truce. By the way, blessed, I love your new avatar.

Yeah, it's beautiful. :) I should change mine.
Of ocurse I'd never call a truce! I enjoyed the arguement too much. :agry2:
Oh, and Brother Trevor, you know I was joking, right? But I still think you voters should watch him... :ninja:
p.s. check the time on bro Trevor's accusatory post and my transcript. :D

You're just jealous of Bro. T cause he's more popular than you.
And it doesn't matter if you would never call a truce, cause I already did. No more, at least not on this disturbing matter.

See proof Bro T, now i can vote, Joe was secretly yearning for it :D
I may have been itchin' for a good ol' down home row - adds zest to the forums. :D
But no, I wasn't yearning for Ruth's opinion on my looks - though I do quite forgive you Ruth, as I already stated.
I also want to thank those who stood by me and recognized my, albeit dry, humour. But hey, DJ is a good candidate too. :)
I'm going to deny you that pleasure and not give you any reds.
Getting this thread back on topic. The pruning is complete - no animals were harmed in this process. As a matter of fact, with two small exceptions, we didn't delete any accounts that didn't meet the criteria of having never posted and having not logged in or created an account this month. The two exceptions were members guilty of spam... and I think they were banned, not deleted.
All newcomers will have to verify their e-mail address after registering in order to activate their new account. This will block MOST spammers.
Seeing as we are in the Support Forum, it would be best to no longer diverge from the topic of this thread. If there are any support issues having to do with the pruning operation, please post it here. Otherwise, feel free to make use of the other forums. Thank you all for your cooperation and helpfulness.

WAIT A SECOND!
Where did Nateīs funny post about Ruth and Josiah go?
I was gonna give him green for it - come on ppl, it was JUST A JOKE.
I canīt believe you guys delete just anything you want simply because you donīt like it. That is definitely NOT ok.
Iīd say that this is abuse of power!
Ruth was really upset about it. Then again, maybe she was just trying to make me feel guilty? I dunno. I don't. Feel guilty, that is. But hey, what can ya do? Deleting something to make people feel better rather than working to resolve some issue seems to be a recurring theme around here.

I'm sure we all knew it was a joke... but jokes can go too far in some cases, especially when someone is sensitive on a certain topic.
And no, I didn't delete any posts on this thread... though I can understand why they were.

You can call it an abuse of power, does not matter. I deleted that post it was going a bit to far.
I also deleted several posts after my Public Service Announcement. I asked that everyone keep the thread on it's original topic - pruning.
However, since no one seems to have anything to add and everything went smoothly, I'm closing this thread down. The pruning is done, it's no longer a relevant support topic.
