Thank the Lord for His enabling!!

I have successfully installed Edubuntu (http://www.edubuntu.org) linux on a machine I put together for my son to us in homeschooling.

This was the first time I've succesfully installed linux. It feels pretty good actually.

I went to New egg (http://www.newegg.com) and got an athalon 64 3400+ processor/mother board/DVD drive/RAM under $250 shipped!!

So now, Zion can watch his A beka DVDs for homeschooling as well as have a nice machine with a full office suite (http://www.openoffice.org) and plenty of educational options (http://www.edubuntu.org/Screenshots) for him to use as he grows and continues to learn.

So that feels really good. Thank the Lord.

And the girls say we never talk about anything interesting in here. What could be more interesting than this?

That a way BroTrevor...

I would love to talk about Homeschooling, but alas, I have no kids....

Granted the females tend to think that we NEED to post in here a huge amount of times, while their conversations tend to be really dry and uninformative, even though they are FULL of post, sigh.

I'll take our quality over there quanity anyday.

That is all...

Hrmm... of course the INTENT of the post was to talk about how great it was getting a new computer running with a previously afore-thought "challenging" operating system.

Has anyone else ever tried linux?

How did it go?

How did it go?apart from some video driver problems it was all easily setup -- I didn't know anything about linux and well it was four years ago (drivers were more of a problem then) - this thing, "debian", isn't the easiest for newbies, though I think nowadays it isn't as hard to setup anymore

Being as almost everything is configured to work the best with windows... I think I'll skip playing around with linux or macs unless I really needed to for something ;)

Sigh... my humblest apologies.. I actually read a couple girl posts right before I got here, so it kinda carried over...

And then I really had no clue what you were talking about... *Sighs deeper*, and since that made me feel dumb, I avoided the issues.

Again, I am sorry....

I have read some about Linux, but the installation process looked confusing and tedious, so I decided to stick with good ol' windows. Maybe down the road when they get the bugs worked out and streamline the install a bit I might consider trying it.

Yeah, I was the same way. But Ubuntu installed like a snap...real easy.

I've tried Linux just sometimes, at school, we had one old Linux and then in one brother's computer, he has got the Suse 10 and it was actually really good looking and working OS (looked pretty much the same as XP by MS) but dont think, I'd ever install Linux for my primary OS by my own free will. :D I think, Windows is still better for my purposes. :) Well, my current opinion, so who knows, if I have Linux sometime. :wheelchai

Glad, you get it working! Is it much more different to use than XP? How about support of peripherals, no problems to install drivers for them and such?

With current hardware, not uber-new not really old, installing seemed to go just fine. Recognizes most hardware and such.

Ubuntu makes it pretty easy. I'm still trying my hand with getting debian to work, it's quite a bit more challenging.

it is? well because Ubuntu is based on debian you could try to find how that solved certain problems (probably just drivers or start services you got to enable or such)

I used to use slackware. It was a linux OS that fit onto a mini-cd, and could be run on nearly any computer. It's only real convenience is that it offered a comfortable OS anywhere you went. The downside was it's massive usage of resources.

So later I installed Mandrake on an old laptop. That was kinda fun. Linux isn't all that hard to install though. Not compared to windows.
